MARRAKECH TO FES DESERT TOUR ITINERARY

Marrakech to Fes desert tour 2 days
    Day 1: Marrakech – Telouet – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley – Merzouga

We will pick you up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech early in the morning to begin this Marrakech to Fes desert tour. The journey starts by crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest mountain pass in North Africa, offering sweeping panoramic views over the valleys and traditional Berber villages below.

Along the way, we’ll make scenic stops for photos, tea, or coffee, with time to relax and take in the mountain scenery before continuing toward Ouarzazate. We’ll visit Kasbah Taourirt, one of the most impressive fortified kasbahs in southern Morocco, and stop at the famous Atlas Film Studios, where many Hollywood blockbusters and historical epics have been filmed. Lunch will be served in Ouarzazate, often called the “Door of the Desert” and the gateway to this Marrakech to Fes desert tour.

From there, we continue through the Valley of Roses and the Dades Valley, with its dramatic rock formations and lush palm groves. We’ll pass through Tinghir, with the option to visit the breathtaking Todra Gorge if time allows, then continue through Tinjdad and Jorf, where we’ll stop to see the region’s traditional underground irrigation system (khettara) — an ancient engineering feat still used by local farmers today.

Continuing on, we reach Erfoud, where the landscape begins to shift into the Saharan oasis of Tafilalet, before arriving at our hotel in Merzouga. After a short break to freshen up, you’ll pack a small overnight bag with the essentials for the desert (leaving the rest of your luggage safely at the hotel), and set off on camelback across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi — one of the most iconic experiences of any Marrakech to Fes desert tour.

The camel trek offers incredible opportunities to photograph the sunset over the dunes. On arrival at the desert camp, you’ll have free time to climb the highest dunes nearby and try sandboarding before dinner. As night falls, you’ll enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner served beside your tent, followed by Berber music around the campfire under one of the clearest starry skies in the world. The camp offers comfortable private tents, clean facilities, and warm Berber hospitality, ensuring a memorable and peaceful overnight stay in the Sahara.

Day 2: Merzouga – Rissani – Ziz Valley – Azrou Cedar Forest – Ifrane – Fez

Before sunrise, you’ll be woken to climb the dunes once more for unforgettable views of the sun rising over the Sahara. Afterward, we return to the hotel in Merzouga for a shower and breakfast before setting off on the final leg of this fes to marrakech desert tour, now heading toward Fez.

En route, we pass through Rissani, Erfoud, and Errachidia, then enter the stunning Ziz Valley, known for its vast palm groves and dramatic canyon landscapes carved by the Ziz River. We’ll make several stops along the way to enjoy panoramic viewpoints and stretch our legs.

Continuing through Midelt and into the Middle Atlas Mountains, the scenery shifts dramatically from desert terrain to green forests and crisp mountain air. Near Azrou, we pass through the famous cedar forests, home to Morocco’s wild Barbary macaques — with a good chance to spot them in their natural habitat.

We then continue to Ifrane, often nicknamed the “Switzerland of Morocco” for its alpine-style architecture, gabled rooftops, and clean, leafy streets — a striking contrast to the Sahara landscapes of the previous day. From Ifrane, the final stretch of the drive takes us through forested hills and small towns before arriving in Fez in the late afternoon or early evening.

On arrival, we’ll drop you off comfortably at your riad or hotel in Fez, marking the end of an unforgettable desert trip from Marrakech to Fes filled with mountain passes, oasis valleys, a night under the Sahara stars, and the diverse landscapes that make this one of Morocco’s most rewarding desert tours from Marrakech.

    • This 2-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes exceeded all my expectations! Our driver/guide was fantastic – knowledgeable, friendly, and made sure we didn’t miss any photo opportunities. Ait Benhaddou was absolutely stunning, and the camel trek into the Sahara at sunset was magical. The desert camp was comfortable with delicious food and amazing stargazing. Despite being a short tour, we saw so much. Perfect for travelers with limited time. Highly recommend!

    • We needed to get from Marrakech to Fes and chose this desert tour instead of just taking a bus – best decision ever! The Atlas Mountains scenery was breathtaking, and sleeping in the Sahara was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our guide Hassan was wonderful, sharing stories about Berber culture and Moroccan history. The itinerary was well-paced, and we never felt rushed. The sunrise over the dunes was unforgettable. Worth every penny!

    • ¡Increíble! This tour packed so much into two days. From the kasbah of Ait Benhaddou to the stunning Todra Gorge, every stop was special. The highlight was definitely riding camels into Erg Chebbi dunes and spending the night in a traditional Berber tent. The camp staff were so welcoming, and the drumming around the campfire was great fun. Day 2 through the cedar forests and Ifrane was equally beautiful. Small group tour made it feel personal. Absolutely recommended!

    • If you’re short on time but want to experience the Sahara, this is THE tour to book. Our driver Mohammed was excellent – safe, informative, and very accommodating. The landscapes changed dramatically throughout the journey, and the desert camp was better than expected (clean toilets, comfortable beds, great food). Watching the sunset and sunrise over the dunes was spectacular. The drive through the Middle Atlas on day 2 was a beautiful contrast. Ended perfectly in the historic city of Fes. Can’t fault this tour at all!
