    ITINERARY

    4 days Fes desert tour

Your Morocco Fes to Marrakech desert tour begins with a morning pick-up from your hotel or riad in Fes. The route heads toward Ifrane, a mountain town worth a brief stop, before continuing into the cedar forest of Azrou in the Middle Atlas Mountains, where Barbary apes can often be seen among the trees.

From there, the drive continues toward Merzouga by way of Midelt and the palm-filled Ziz Valley. You will arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon and settle into a riad overlooking the golden dunes that surround the town.

Driving distance: Approximately 500 km Driving time: Approximately 7.5 hours

Day 2: Full day to Explore the Merzouga desert

After breakfast at your riad, set out to explore the Merzouga area. The first stop is Khamlia, a small village known for Gnawa music, a rhythmic tradition brought north from sub-Saharan Africa generations ago. From there, drive off-road to M’Fis, an abandoned village once home to Galena mines.

Continue to a nomadic family living behind the Erg Chebbi dunes, where you’ll be welcomed with tea and an introduction to a way of life shaped entirely around the desert.

In the afternoon, mount a camel for the ride across the high dunes toward your desert camp. Along the way, stop on a high dune to try sandboarding while watching the sunset. In the evening, gather around the campfire for drumming, music, and a night spent sleeping under a sky full of stars.

Driving distance: Approximately 57 km Driving time: Approximately 1 hour 15 min

Early risers can watch the sunrise over the dunes before breakfast at the desert camp. From there, the journey continues through Rissani, Erfoud, and Tinghir on the way to Todra Gorge. If the timing lines up with a market day in Rissani (Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday), you’ll have the chance to browse a traditional Moroccan souk filled with handicrafts, spices, and street food.

At Todra Gorge, take a walk beneath the towering canyon walls, one of the most photographed landscapes on any fes to marrakech desert tour. The route then continues to Dades Gorge, where you’ll check into your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Driving distance: Approximately 310 km Driving time: Approximately 5 hours

After breakfast, the tour follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs toward Ouarzazate, with the option to visit the Atlas Studios or simply admire the site from outside. Continue to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its role in films including Gladiator, Prince of Persia, and Game of Thrones.

Following lunch, the journey crosses the High Atlas Mountains toward Marrakech, passing through Berber villages and scenic viewpoints along the way. This final leg brings your 4 days tour from Fes to Marrakech to a close as you’re dropped off at your accommodation in Marrakech.

Driving distance: Approximately 353 km Driving time: Approximately 6.5 hours

    • We booked our desert tour with Mirage Morocco Travel, and it was hands down the best decision of our vacation! From the moment Walid picked us up in Fes, we knew we were in for an amazing adventure. He is a fantastic, safe driver who made the long journeys through the Middle Atlas Mountains and Ziz Valley so comfortable and enjoyable. When we arrived in the Sahara, our camp host Omar welcomed us with traditional mint tea and ensured our night under the stars in Erg Chebbi was magical. The sunset camel trek and the luxury bivouac camp exceeded all our expectations. Thank you to Mirage Morocco Travel, Walid, and Omar for an unforgettable experience!

    • An absolute 5-star experience from start to finish! Our driver and guide, Mohamed, was simply outstanding. His English is perfect, and he possesses a deep knowledge of Moroccan history, culture, and local Berber traditions. He knew the exact best spots for panoramic photos along the Todra Gorges and Dades Valley, and he always took us to great local restaurants for lunch. The 4×4 vehicle was immaculate and air-conditioned, which made the drives very relaxing. The camel trekking in Merzouga and waking up early for the desert sunrise was a bucket-list moment. Mohamed truly made this trip special—highly recommended!

    • If you are looking for an authentic tour from Fes to explore the Sahara and the imperial heritage of Morocco, do not hesitate to book this! Every single detail was well planned. The drive through the cedar forests of Azrou to see the Barbary apes was a wonderful start, but sleeping in a traditional Berber tent in the heart of Erg Chebbi was the ultimate highlight. Our driver, Mohamed, was polite, accommodating, and made sure we never felt rushed at any of the scenic stops or historic Kasbahs like Ait Ben Haddou. The accommodations selected for our overnight stays were stunning, with delicious dinners and breakfasts included. Truly a journey through the real Morocco!
